Session Description: Increasingly physiotherapists are using solid filiform needles for treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. These invasive treatments have the potential for causing adverse effects (AE). This presentation will discuss the frequency and types of AE that may occur during and after treatments. A review of the prevention and treatment of AEs will be discussed including some recent published case reports.

Speaker: Dr. Vanessa Valdes, Mount Sinai

Biography: Vanessa graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelors of Science (PT) in 1980.  She graduated from the Tristate College of Acupuncture (TSCA) in 1999 with a Master’s degree in Acupuncture. Following her graduation she joined the faculty at TSCA where she taught point location, myology and orthopaedic evaluation from 1999 – 2018. She is a national examiner for the Clean Needle Technique course (USA). She completed the United States APTA Orthopaedic Certified Specialist (OCS) certification in 2013. In 2015 she obtained her DPT from Arcadia University. She has authored articles on Scope of Practice issued relating to Dry Needling.
