FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE CANADIAN PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSOCIATION CANCELS ITS CONGRESS 2020
Ottawa, ON (March 15, 2020) – The Canadian Physiotherapy Association is officially announcing the cancellation of its Congress 2020, originally scheduled for May 28-30, 2020, as well as the suspension of all in-person continuing education courses and Division-specific member meetings until further notice. All registered attendees and exhibitors will receive a full refund of their registration fee. Refunds will be processed within the next three weeks. Please contact your travel agent to discuss cancellation options for your travel. We encourage attendees to take advantage of measures recently announced by airlines in response to the outbreak.
Following a significant risk management assessment exercise and consultation with their Board of Directors, the CPA has decided that the cancellation of Congress 2020 and all other CPA events is in the best interest of both participants and Canadians.
The CPA values the physiotherapist’s role in combatting crises and driving outcomes, and the decision to cancel the CPA’s Congress 2020 was done to both adhere to PHAC’s recommendations (per the “Risk-informed decision-making for mass gatherings during COVID-19 global outbreak”), as well as to ensure that CPA members are available to the community where their support is required.
“As a profession that has supported the health of Canadians in times of crisis for the last 100 years, we know that our role is on the ground, helping Canadians. It is critical as an Association, we represent our members, who work with populations at risk, and live our values,” said Viivi Riis, President of the CPA Board of Directors. “The promotion and protection of health is our number one priority.”
As a result, all non-essential campaigns and events, including in-person courses, are suspended until further notice so the CPA and its members can remain vigilant as a vital part of the health care system as Canada tackles this global challenge. The CPA is committed to continuing to monitor and address the situation as it changes and will issue additional statements regarding the lifting of these suspensions as things develop.
While the CPA is disappointed to cancel the flagship event and celebration of its 100th Anniversary, it would be a disservice to their long, respected history to focus on celebration in a time of need such as this. The CPA is actively regrouping internally and with their stakeholders to develop 100th Anniversary initiatives that support the pride members feel in the centenary and deliver on the education and inspiration anticipated as part of the CPA’s Congress 2020, while respecting the severity of the current climate.
The CPA will provide more information as it becomes available and direct any inquiries regarding specific COVID-19 concerns for the safety of our patients, members, and the public to the previously issued statement on March 12: The CPA’s Statement on Coronavirus (COVID-19).
