Courses are a 2 to 3 day lecture and practical course (2 days for those requiring recertification only) that meets the requirements of the Canadian Red Cross Society and Sport Physiotherapy Canada for First Responder Certification. Registrants must be in healthcare to attend these courses or a second year student in these specific healthcare fields: physiotherapy, athletic therapy, sport massage therapy, chiropractor, or medical school (MD or Doctor of Medicine degree), as these First Responder courses are shortened for those who are in a health profession. No exceptions can be made, as this would go against our training partnership with the Canadian Red Cross.

The examples and scenarios used will be sport-specific to enhance the learning of all participants with regard to event coverage situations (whether planning to challenge the SPC Certificate or Diploma exams, or not). At the end of the course, the participant:

  • Complete a standardized written exam to meet national Canadian Red Cross standards
  • Have an enhanced ability to respond to emergency situations on-site (ie: head injuries and bleeds)
  • Be trained to use oxygen and an Automated External Defibrillator
  • Be able to transfer players onto spinal boards effectively (including rolls)

Please note that First Responder Certification must be renewed every 3 years and Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) must be renewed every year; however, SPC will only be reviewing your First Responder Certification.

Course Fees

SPC Members: Full Course: $565 (plus tax); Recertification: $440 (plus tax);
Non-member Fees: Full Course: $645 (plus tax); Recertification: $520 (plus tax);

All participants will receive a pocket CPR mask during the course.
Meal and refreshments are not provided.

Typical Schedule

There could be adjustments based on the facility and instructor availability

Friday, 12:00pm to 8:00pm (typically only Full Course)
Saturday, 8:00am to 5:00pm (Full & Re-Cert)
Sunday, 8:00am to 5:00pm (typically Full & Re-Cert)

Cancellation Policy

Transfers or cancellations made a full week prior to the course (the Thursday at 11:59 pm ET) will be approved. Cancellations will receive a full refund, minus a $75 administration fee.

Transfer requests or cancellations made on or after the Friday before the course, will NOT be approved nor receive a refund.
