Oncology Division News in a Capsule

The Oncology Division is financially supporting a consensus exercise to update guidelines on the management of Lymphedema. This initiative is being coordinated and led by Margaret McNeely of our Division Executive and member of our National Education Committee. It will take place on the morning of Friday, November 1, 2019 just prior to the National Lymphedema Conference (November 1-2, 2019).

The Mitacs Grant Initiative for research funding (PhD) and mentorship of post-doctoral students focused on Return to Work was hosted by our Division this spring at McGill’s School of Physical & Occupational Therapy. Fifteen experts on Cancer and Work, including researchers, educators, and clinicians, were invited to participate. The discussions were very stimulating and, given the expertise at the table, we have identified three streams of research to be facilitated.

Our National Education Committee has devised a red cap survey for Universities to determine the level, content, and format of education in Rehabilitation Oncology being provided to physiotherapists across Canada. This survey will be conducted across all Canadian Universities with physiotherapy programs in the coming months.

Despite the prevalence of cancer, oncology rehabilitation is rarely recognized for its benefits before frank disability secondary to treatment is apparent. We need to AMPLIFY our voices nationally with medical, surgical, and radio oncologists, nurses, social workers, and other members of the health care team to develop screening and treatment services. Please add your voice to the Call for Action by educating, engaging, and advocating for service provision with ALL members of the Oncology team! We look forward to a collaborative and productive year.
