Stanley A. Herring, MD, is a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine, Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, and Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington where he holds the Zackery Lystedt Sports Concussion Endowed Chair. He serves as Co-Medical Director of the UW Medicine Sports Concussion Program, and he is a Co-Founder and Senior Medical Advisor of the Sports Institute at UW Medicine. Dr. Herring served for many years as one of the team physicians for the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners. He is also a long-time member of the Concussion in Sport Group and an author of many of their systematic reviews and international consensus statements. Along with these papers, Dr. Herring has many other scientific publications regarding sports concussions and other sports medicine-related topics. He is an active clinician, educator and internationally recognized and highly sought after speaker on a variety of sports medicine and physiatric topics. He has received many honors during his career including being the 2021 recipient of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Frank H. Krusen, MD, Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed by that Academy as well as the 2025 recipient of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Honor Award, the College’s most prestigious award granted to an individual with a distinguished career of outstanding scholarly and academic contributions to ACSM’s mission.
