The Department of Physical Therapy, in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Teaching (tenure track). This position will primarily be based at the distributed Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) Program site in Victoria, BC, at one of the UBC Faculty of Medicine affiliated institutions, the University of Victoria (UVIC).
The Department of Physical Therapy’s key coursework activity relates to the training of students to become practicing Physical Therapists. The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program is rigorous and scholarly while delivering a high standard of instruction and creative opportunities for learning, which provides students with a strong foundation to support practice of the profession. The three core streams of the program are musculoskeletal, neuro, and cardio-vascular theory and practice. Clinical Education is a key element of the MPT program. The MPT program is distributed to Vancouver Island in part to address Physical Therapy retention and recruitment issues in this rapidly growing area of the province. The Department also provides leadership in Physical Therapy research and the translation of novel research outcomes into best practices in this field of healthcare.
Reporting to the Head of the UBC Department of Physical Therapy, the successful candidate will be actively engaged in teaching within the MPT Program, and provide mentorship and training to graduate learners. The incumbent will also have a coordination role as Site Co-lead for the program. The incumbent will contribute to providing innovative clinical education programming and provide support for clinical faculty related to their clinical teaching role. This position involves working with students, faculty, clinicians, and academics across the University, clinical sectors, and BC professional organizations (e.g., the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia, and the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia).
The position will also participate in relevant service activities within the University and provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with other programs and departments and be highly engaged in educational leadership activities including curriculum development and innovation, and other teaching and learning initiatives. Major activities will include but are not restricted to the following:
Teaching, course coordination and distributed clinical site lead responsibilities within the MPT Program;
Providing content and expertise to inform program curriculum development and evaluation, within the appointee’s area of practice.
The successful candidate will have the following:
A minimum of a degree in Physical Therapy, and preferably a post-graduate Masters in Physical Therapy or a related discipline (education, clinical or research);
Previous clinical teaching experience with Physical Therapy or other health professional students;
Demonstrated evidence of ability and commitment to teaching, and promise of educational leadership;
A minimum of five years of clinical practice experience as a Physical Therapist with experience in a relevant physical therapy area;
Excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal abilities, and strong technology enhanced learning and computer skills.
