Speaker Biography
Saleema Hutchinson (she/her) is a social worker based in Tiohtià:ke, also known as Montréal. She offers psychosocial support and training services specialized in chronic pain management. Passionate about empowering individuals, groups and communities, she takes into account the individual, social, systemic and environmental dimensions of each person’s pain experience.
With a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences as well as in Social Work, Saleema’s intervention practices include strength-based approaches, pain neuroscience education and for those who are interested, mindfulness-based practices. She aims to help people better understand their bodies, to share information on different pain management tools and to accompany people in the exploration of strategies to improve their quality of life. By combining her clinical knowledge with a caring approach, she offers personalized care according to each person’s context, beliefs and preferences. Intervention techniques are based on self-compassion and value the benefits of movement, moments of simple pleasure and connection with nature. Saleema’s professional practice is based on inclusive and anti-oppressive values, taking into account the effects of racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia, and recognizing power inequalities in access to care and health services.
Trained by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy and a member of the Association québécoise de guides de Shinrin Yoku, Saleema is also the founder of Equinox Forest Therapy. This role brings her to guide “forest bathing” or nature-connected activities in natural settings for small groups.
